Meet the Otis B.O.N.E.® Tool
In our last blog we covered cleaning the star chamber of AR-15s and AR-10s with our Star Chamber Cleaning Tool. If you followed along, you broke down the rifle and pulled the bolt carrier group out to get at the star chamber area. If you hadn’t given your rifle a good clean in awhile, your bolt carrier group is probably caked with carbon.
Enter the B.O.N.E.® Tool. Designed to clean the bolt, bolt carrier and firing pin. But why is it called BONE when it looks nothing like the sort? Welcome to product design ladies and gents. When we first embarked on this endeavor, we went through multiple design iterations. The design we thought was the final design looked like a bone so we went with it. After some testing and feedback, our talented engineers came up with a better design. Product improvement at it’s finest. By that point, B.O.N.E.® Tool had stuck with us, so we kept the name and the tool went on to win the 2014 American Rifleman Golden Bullseye Accessory of the Year Award.
The B.O.N.E.® Tool was desperately needed because dirty guns cause malfunctions. The BCG is a critical component that makes the gun go “bang,” so it must be broken down and cleaned in detail. The bolt carrier group is also usually the part that fails when an AR weapon platform jams. Whether you’re shooting for fun or your life depends on it, “ain’t nobody got time for that.”
To save yourself the heartbreak of a malfunctioning firearm, start by taking apart your bolt carrier assembly.
Put the bolt carrier scraper into the bolt carrier and twist to scrape the carbon and fouling away.
Then place the bolt into the bolt scraper and do the same.
Lastly, drop the firing pin in the center hole of the B.O.N.E.® Tool and twist to clean the firing pin shoulder.
The tool was designed to have some play in it to accommodate the varying tolerances of the bolt and bolt carrier so it won’t be perfect fit, but it’ll get the bulk of debris and really loosen up carbon buildup. Removing carbon buildup from deep inside the bolt carrier is a challenge, but the B.O.N.E.® Tool makes the job a cinch.
The B.O.N.E.® Tool is available in two versions for 5.56mm or 7.62mm rifles and is proudly made in the USA. Get more information or pick one up today at www.otistec.com.
